Welcome Back Marina Vista!
The wait is over...the first day of school is almost here! Our Marina Vista Elementary team is excited to welcome our amazing students and families back for what is sure to be an incredible 2026–2027 school year! School will begin on Wednesday August 5, 2026 at 8:00 am.
We are especially excited to welcome our students and families back to campus and show off the many improvements completed over the summer! Our classrooms have been beautifully refreshed and look amazing! You'll also notice updates to our parking lot, front garden, and TK/Kindergarten playground area. These improvements help create an even more welcoming and engaging learning environment for our students.
Additional campus enhancements are already underway, including our new electronic marquee, updated school sign, new classroom sinks, and other exciting improvements. We appreciate your patience as these projects continue throughout the school year and look forward to sharing each new milestone with our Marina Vista community.
Who am I: My name is Reginald Breland (Mr. B) and I am the Principal at Marina Vista Elementary School and so excited for you to either be joining us for the first time this year or returning to our awesome school!

A little about me: I grew up in Long Island, in New York and moved to the Monterey Bay Area 13 years ago with my wife Tomiko! We have three children Dean (12), Bryce (11), and Clay (5). We enjoy sports (especially basketball and tennis), getting outdoors (national parks, pools, and beaches), and reading! I taught in New York and Maryland prior to moving to California and enjoyed playing sports at the collegiate level. I have been in the Marina Community for the past 10 years beginning as an Assistant Principal at Marina High School, then transitioning to Los Arboles Middle School as Principal, and finally moving to Marina Vista as Principal just two short years ago!

Principal’s Message At Marina Vista, we believe that strong partnerships between home and school are essential to student success. We encourage you to stay connected by reading our newsletters, checking ParentSquare regularly and communicating with teachers, while participating in school events throughout the year. We have a number of fun events and your involvement makes a tremendous difference, and we look forward to working together to support every Hawk.
Whether you're walking through our doors for the very first time or returning for another year as a Hawk, we can't wait to see your smiling faces, hear about your summer adventures, and begin this exciting journey together. Our classrooms are ready, our teachers are excited, and our staff has been working hard to prepare an amazing year of learning, creativity, and fun.
This year, we'll challenge ourselves to learn new things, build lasting friendships, celebrate our successes, and grow together as a school community. At Marina Vista, every student belongs, every voice matters, and every day is an opportunity to discover something new. Welcome to Marina Vista!

Please Welcome our New Assistant Principal!
It is my pleasure to introduce and warmly welcome Mrs. Ottmar our new Assistant Principal at Marina Vista Elementary!
Mrs. Ottmar brings 10 years of experience in education and a passion for supporting students, staff, and families. A lifelong resident of Pacific Grove, she is deeply connected to our local community and is excited to join the Marina Vista family.
Outside of school, Mrs. Ottmar enjoys spending time with her husband, who is also an educator. She is an avid sports fan, especially when it comes to golf, and proudly cheers on her favorite team, the Chicago Cubs. At home, she also enjoys the company of her two energetic Boxer dogs.
From the moment you meet Mrs. Ottmar, you'll quickly see her warmth, positive spirit, and commitment to building strong relationships with students and families. I know she will be a wonderful addition to our school and an incredible partner as we continue creating a safe, welcoming, and engaging learning environments for every Hawk.
Please join me in giving Mrs. Ottmar a warm Marina Vista welcome when you see her on campus. We are thrilled to have her on our team and look forward to an amazing school year together!
First Day of School Reminders |
First Day of School: Wednesday August 5th. School starts at 8:00 AM. and is a short day. School will end at 12:50 PM.

Morning Breakfast: Begins at 7:25 am (*please note that this is a change from previous years) in the cafeteria. |
Rosters: Classroom rosters and room assignments are posted outside of the Marina Vista administrative office.
Important Parent Reminder: We know the first day can be emotional, especially for families, and it is often even harder on parents than it is on children. Rest assured, once the school day begins, students quickly settle in, connect with their teachers and classmates, and start enjoying their new school year.
What if my child has a really hard time on the first day? We have a team of support staff ready. Myself and our Assistant Principal, Early Learning Assistants, Instructional Assistants, Supervisory Assistants, and Mental Health and School Psychology staff all ready to support your child. Feel free to remind your child that our staff is there to keep them safe and happy - and if they have a difficult time, to let their teacher know. Their teacher will reach out to get a team member to the classroom to help.
Additionally, If you and your child need help finding a classroom, we will have staff at the front of the school and office ready to support.

At Marina Vista, student safety is always our top priority. To help ensure a smooth and secure arrival and dismissal process here are our arrival and dismissal procedures.
New Procedures:
1. Traffic Flow on Carmel Avenue
Cones are placed along Carmel Avenue during drop-off and pick-up times. Vehicles will not be allowed to cross the double yellow line. All cars must enter the pick-up zone traveling eastbound on Carmel Avenue. This will improve traffic flow and provide greater safety for families who park in the neighborhood and need to cross the street.
2. Waiting Zone
A designated waiting zone is set up outside the gate, marked with cones and yellow caution tape. This will allow teachers to safely exit the gate and ensure that students are released directly to their families in an orderly manner. Please support your child's teacher by having the student give a high 5, fist bump or other teacher approved exit routine. This routine will help to strengthen student teacher connection while also letting the teacher know that the student sees their parent/guardian.
3 . Classroom Pickup Areas
As a reminder, each class has a designated pick-up area. Please continue to proceed directly to your child’s assigned area. A picture of the pickup locations is included below for your reference.
 With your support, we will continue to provide a safe and welcoming environment for all our student scholars and families. Thank you for partnering with us to keep our school community safe!
Qualifying students can apply for a FREE bus pass from July 9 - 17. Beginning July 20, registration opens to ALL students. 📅 Reminder: All students riding the bus are required to have a bus pass by September 1, 2026.
